Why Should You Follow a Paleo Diet

Hands down, the number one reason to follow a Paleo diet is this Smoked Bison Brisket.  Oh my gosh, it is so good.  My husband smokes the bison brisket once a year at the Santa Anna World Championship Bison Cook-Off and uses 100% Paleo-approved ingredients.

I would…and could, just stop my post right there, but there’s a ton more reasons to start and stick with a Paleo diet and amazing protein is only one piece of the puzzle.

Let’s start by looking at our options.  With the multitude of fad diets out there today that start with “NO…” it can be very disheartening to completely adhere to the diet.  It’s basic human nature to shy away from rules and people telling us we can’t do something.  I see it every day with my son.  When I say, “Wyatt, stop jumping,” he almost immediately jumps.  Of course, he knows he’s now in more trouble, but the important part is that he naturally wanted to jump after I explicitly said not to.

If a diet says, “Never eat protein again,” I guarantee all you’ll think about is protein.  It’s impossible to follow a diet when all you’re thinking about is the food you can’t have.

It’s about time we retrain our brains and think about the lifestyle we want to live and be bound by.  For starters, let’s remove the word “no” and focus on what is really important here.

Your health and nutrition.

By focusing on your health and nutrition and doing so by ingesting the minimum amount of calories, you can completely change your lifestyle and easily lose those stubborn pounds.

More Nutrition per Calorie

When making a big purchase – like a refrigerator, for example – we spend a lot of time searching for the best deal.  We research the internet for reviews and narrow the list down based on the features we want at best, lowest price.

The sale doesn’t end there, we further our research by going to the store and looking at our options in person, testing them out, opening up the doors, pulling out the drawers.

After extensive research and once we feel comfortable with our selection, we finally make the decision and purchase the refrigerator.

Why don’t we do the same thing when eating food?  We should invest time and find the best food sources that offer the most nutrition for the lowest calorie price tag.

Don’t worry, I’ve done the research for you and the Paleo diet checks off all the boxes.

Nutrition – Fiber

Let’s take a look at fiber first.  If you want to increase your fiber, most people think grains, like whole grain bread or oats.  However, grains are not the best choice because they have a higher price tag (amount of calories) for fewer grams of fiber.

A single slice of whole grain bread is 110 calories and only supplies 3 grams of fiber.  When you follow a Paleo diet, you get fiber from fruits and vegetables by ingesting a much lower amount of calories.  For example, a cup of blackberries is 62 calories and supplies 7.6 grams of fiber.  Way better “bang” for your “buck.”

Let me give you an apples-to-apples comparison here.  Let’s go back to the refrigerator example.  If you only had $1000 to buy a refrigerator, you would probably compare several brands and models and purchase the one that offered the most value for your money.

Similarly, if you had 100 calories available for fiber and you had to choose between grains, fruit or vegetables, research would show that fruit and vegetables offer more fiber per 100-calorie serving than grains.

As seen in the table, 100 calories of blackberries offer 12.3 grams of fiber  in addition to other great nutrients too, which is 5 times more fiber than you could get from 100 calories of whole grain bread.

Nutrition – Calcium

One of the most common misconceptions about following Paleo, is based around the perceived calcium intake.  The dairy industry has spent enormous amounts of money advertising that calcium = dairy.  This is absolutely not true and I’ll show you why.

Calcium Content per 100 Calories

As seen in the table, 100 calories of cooked collard greens offers 650 mg of calcium, which is almost 3 times as much calcium than from milk.

Let me explain further.  If you wanted to gain the same 650 mg of calcium from milk, you would have to drink 3 cups of milk.  Plus, you would pay a much higher price tag at about 390 calories.

If you chose cheese as your calcium source, you would have to eat 4 ounces, or 1/2 cup, of cheese to gain 650 mg of calcium and ingest 440 calories in doing so.

Nutrition – Protein

Finally, no one can argue that a Paleo diet offers protein; however, in relationship to other protein sources, meat, seafood and eggs are the best option.

Following the same concept, if you had 100 calories available for protein and you could choose between legumes, meat, seafood or eggs, research would show that meat, seafood and eggs offer more protein per 100-calorie serving than legumes.

Plus, the protein available in meat, seafood and eggs is easier for the body to extract and results in less waste.

Let’s stop all these fad diets that keep telling you, “no,” and focus on your health by providing your body with the nutrition it needs and minimizing the amount of calories we use to accomplish that.

Listen to your body, listen to your nutritional needs, listen to the research that proves, time and time again…why you should follow a Paleo diet.

  1. I wouldn’t worry about the calorie too much. Just a lot of real food from different sources. Makes sense though.
